History
The Ill Eagles are a group of local businessmen who have played Old Timer's
hockey together since 1974. Many years ago, one of the members of the Ill
Eagles was killed in a car accident.
Dave McLaren was a former junior hockey player who was involved in sports in
North Bay on different levels. He was a fine man who exemplified the best
aspects of true sportsmanship.
The Ill Eagles wanted to create a fitting tribute to Dave and decided that
this trophy recognizing determination, dedication and heart that are
essential on a hockey team would be a fitting tribute to a good friend.
Dave's son Steve had played for the Trappers & Dave had been involved in
helping the team. We felt this was the team that we should be supporting on
Dave's behalf.
The purpose of the trophy is not to honour the top scorer or top forward,
etc. as there are sufficient awards for those athletes. This trophy
acknowledges the important qualities which special athletes bring to a
hockey team and which often go unnoticed.
